Young people identify several advocacy strategies and draw conclusions as to their effectiveness. They research efforts in past advocacy campaigns to learn about people, styles, and effectiveness.
Unit: Grow Involved 3-5
Children listen and respond to a biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They discuss the importance of kind acts and service to others. They reflect on a quotation by Dr. King and apply it to their own lives.

Participants identify the impact of humans on lakes and rivers. They explore ways to take responsibility to protect the waterways.

Youth reflect on the lessons they have learned through building cultural competence in this unit. They identify an adult they trust to have critical, or difficult, conversations.
Unit: One Person's Trash
This lesson helps learners see the potential for reusing materials rather than throwing them away. They research and contact community organizations that support recycling efforts.
Unit: Character Education: Respect (Grade 7)
This lesson focuses on another type of respect: valuing the world around you. Learners analyze a John Muir quote and discuss what they can do to show respect for the world.
Unit: Character Education: Honesty (Grade 6)
Learners define honesty as fairness and straightforward conduct. They look for examples in a story and analyze the merits and mistakes of the main character.
Learners dissect the trait of honesty by describing what it feels and looks like, defining it, and giving examples and nonexamples.
