Learners make a talent chain for the group. This is a representation of the many strengths and talents each learner brings, making the whole group strong. A children's book sparks a joyful idea for community members to connect over art, and the learners establish a relationship with people at a retirement home or preschool.

Anticipatory Set:
Read Maybe Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighborhood by F. Isabel Campoy. Discuss the steps it took for painting to bring people together in a community. What other things bring people together? How is the community better because they worked together?
Define community as a group that comes together because of shared interests or because they live, work, or learn in the same place. Communities are made up of diverse individuals who each bring their strengths to the common space and make it better for all.
Discuss how Mira used her talent to make her community better. Discuss how she felt about it and how it affected others. Were they all the same, or was her community made up of different ages, abilities, colors, and genders? What are some of the other talents in her community? In our community?
Together, we have talents, traits, and behaviors that make our community better. This may include things like kindness, good listening, artistic ability, and cooking talent. Make a talents and strengths chain to illustrate that community strength.
- Give each learner three strips of paper (to form the rings of a paper chain).
- They each write one strength or talent on each strip of paper. This is something they are good at or they bring to the community.
- As the learners add their strips to the group chain, they read them aloud. The others listen with respect and respond with encouragement.
- Glue the strips in interlocking rings to make a paper chain of the many talents and strengths and hang it across the room.
Discuss how this chain represents what makes our community strong. They may call on these individual strengths and talents when needed.
Service Project:
Form a relationship with the people at a local retirement home or preschool, building a community of caring and inclusive community of people of different ages and different backgrounds. If possible, arrange to have a director from the other organization visit and share what the relationship will mean to them.
Together they make art, stories, or share other talents with their new friends. If they can meet several times over the semester to build an ongoing relationship, the project will be stronger. Look for ways to contribute talents back and forth, including drawings, storytelling, and words of encouragement.
