Students reflect on what symbols and words communicate who they are. They design a T-shirt that reflects their personality, thoughts, and ideas. This represents their role in a world or community they make better by their actions.
The Learner will
- create a personalized T-shirt.
- clarify the values that creation reflects.
- defend the choice of design.
- T-shirt outline on paper
- pens, pencils, crayons
- Optional: T-shirts, collage materials, paint, scissors, glue
Students may bring in an old T-shirt from home or decorate a T-shirt as homework.
Anticipatory Set: What is your favorite T-shirt design? Why do you like it? In what way do T-shirts represent the diverse contributions we each make to society?
Discuss the elements of a T-shirt reflecting one's personality, thoughts, and ideas. Ask the students: What themes would you represent with words and images? What elements of your impact on the community around you would it include? What color would it be? What would it look like?
Hand out paper with a T-shirt outline and give students 10 to 15 minutes to fill in their designs. Monitor their progress.
When designs are completed, individual students will share with the class and explain how they decided on those designs.
Optional: Students may use paint and collage materials and real T-shirts to design their own T-shirt that represents them as a member of a caring and collaborative community that depends on the diverse talents of each of its members.
