Students brainstorm simple acts of kindness and design a bookmark as a reminder.
The learner will:
- state that any individual can demonstrate caring through performing acts of kindness.
- design a bookmark.
- Blank paper cut into the size and shape of a bookmark, one blank bookmark per learner
Anticipatory Set:
Ask, "How do you show people you care?" Discuss actions like listening, helping with a project, supporting them through difficult times, and asking what they need.
Say, "Caring involves showing concern for the feelings and needs of others and being part of addressing issues together. One of the ways we show caring is by performing acts of kindness." Brainstorm a list of kind acts we can do for our friends, family, and people in our community.
Ask, "What effect can our acts of caring have on our community? What effects can acts of caring have on the giver?"
Learners make a bookmark to encourage small acts of kindness. On a piece of thick paper cut in the size and shape of a bookmark, they write the phrase "Perform Random Acts of Kindness" and decorate using markers or collage materials.
On the back of the bookmarks, they write a list of ideas of small things people can do to show caring. They can pass out their bookmarks to encourage kindness and caring.
Ms. Ishee is a teacher at Covington Middle School in Texas who enjoys teaching service and philanthropy to her middle school students. “When students learn to serve, it creates empathy," she said. "It helps them see individuals instead of groups of others." Read about the service-learning project called Project Linus by Covington Middle School students.
