This unit introduces learners to different types of natural disasters, exploring how their potential devastation could be reduced, and how during and in their aftermath, individuals, civil society organizations and government can provide assistance to help those impacted by the devastation.
The purpose of this unit is to help students understand that each of them is an important and potentially influential member of American society. Every person is not only an individual, but also a member of the various groups that make up our society.

Government makes up the building bricks of society, and philanthropy is the mortar that fills in the cracks and holds the bricks together.
