In this activity young people are asked to consider how their race, ethnicity, gender, or sexuality impact how they control their emotions. This Self-Management tool asks young people to reflect upon how they regulate their behaviors and emotions. They will then be asked to discuss how race, gender, and other identity markers impact the expectations of behavior and emotion regulation from different groups. Different Strokes for Different Folks is inspired by the article, "Why We Can't Afford Whitewashed Social-Emotional Learning" by Dena Simmons.

Participants define philanthropy as givng time, talent or treasure and taking action for the common good. They identify philanthropy in a read-aloud story and the regional news.
Learners read a variety of stories to engage discussion and action about giving and philanthropy. They identify examples of acting for the common good in literature and their community.
Learners brainstorm ways to "build capital in a trust bank account." They read and discuss a Celtic folktale and discuss the role of communication in building trust.
Ignite meaningful action that lights up the world through "Service Sparks" youth projects! Add a variety of cultural holidays to your annual calendar to raise awareness of the variety of ways people celebrate their cultural traditions. Learning about other cultures helps us see the beauty in our similarities and differences. We can reflect on whether there are core values in every culture and how our differences add interest and strength to our community.
