All cultures have practices and customs regarding hospitality, or how we treat guests. In these folktales, we learn about different expectations and degrees of these customs and how travelers test the limits of hospitality and feel the effects of their host's generosity.

The purpose of this lesson is to have students recognize the idea of an emerging democracy, analyze the struggles of the people, and decide on a way to help the people.

We learn a little history of the painters Van Gogh and Gauguin who were driven by a need to give of themselves to others through art. Participants study the techniques and draw their own portraits. They make a gift of the portrait to someone.

Participants identify the attributes of a hero who is acting for the common good. Mother Teresa is a hero for her philanthropic work and character. 

We examine the Core Values of American Democracy and discuss their importance and where we are exposed to them and practice them throughout life.

Using a traditional Jewish text as its basis, this lesson emphasizes the importance of sharing in a relationship.

Students read an African version of the Cinderella story so that they can compare versions and increase their sense of story.
