Unit: My Country, My Community
In a persuasive essay, learners describe the responsibilities of American citizenship and the cost of freedom. They connect how philanthropic action is a part of those costs. “Freedom isn’t free. It passes on an enormous debt to the recipient.”
Unit: Our Land
This culminating activity gives youth an opportunity to teach about our land to others. They spread the word that "commons" are needed, and that when people work together they can make something better.
Introduce the folksinger, Woody Guthrie, and his legendary song This Land Is Your Land. Talk about ways we are generous for the good of others. This can be by lifting someone's spirits or taking care of the land we all share.
Unit: Character Education: Trustworthiness (Grade 7)
The learners read the metaphor drawings of the other groups and copy strong words and phrases that help define trustworthiness. They identify traits of people they know (including themselves) and write a definition of trustworthy.
Unit: Building a Community Garden Santuary
The book, The Gardener, by Sarah Stewart gently illustrates how sharing growing things can be a gift to others and the community.
Unit: We the Kids - The Three Branches and Me
Participants analyze the essential qualities of the Core Democratic Values and how these values are evident in relationships and behavior in a classroom/group and in the community/nation.
Unit: Living in a Community: Intro. to Philanthropy
The children learn that even young people can be philanthropists. Philanthropy is giving time, talent, treasure for the good of the community.
Unit: Character Education: Courage (Grade 6)
The learners choose a person of courage to honor on a commemorative "postage stamp."
Unit: Character Education: Trustworthiness (Grade 6)
Learners brainstorm ways to "build capital in a trust bank account." They read and discuss a Celtic folktale and discuss the role of communication in building trust.
