In this second lesson about Jane Addams, we learn about the impact of her philanthropic work and connect it to the needs of our communities today. Young people discuss voluntary actions they can take inspired by Jane Addams.
Unit: Phil Up on the Arts
The young people create a video by compiling recordings of the songs and acting they did as a group to communicate the meaning of acting for the common good. They share their video with a local hospital, retirement community, or preschool as entertainment.
Unit: Philanthropy—A Day at the Beach
Young people convince others to take care of the beach or protect the Earth. They write an essay or make an advocacy poster.
Unit: Drumming from the Heart
The children visit a local preschool or retirement facility of their choosing to read aloud a book they wrote and illustrated about generous giving. They share a drumming experience and give the drums and books as gifts.
Unit: Wall of Philanthropists
After reading about historical figures who have taken philanthropic action related to justice, youth write a narrative about a more recent (young) philanthropist who took action for social justice.
Unit: Global Peace and Local Legacies
Young people read or watch the stories of individuals (motivations, background, values) who have received the Nobel Peace Prize and analyze the importance of their actions for the common good.
Unit: Character Education: Responsibility (Grade 6)
Through a choice of prompts, the learners reflect on and express their understanding of being responsible.
Unit: Character Education: Integrity (Grade 6)
Learners read a brief description of the tough choice Frederik de Klerk faced as a leader in South Africa. They look at the strength needed to act with integrity when the pressure tells us to conform.
Learners listen to different statements of "the right thing to do" and determine the source of the value or judgment.
