Unit: Personal Giving Mission Statement

Unit: Three Chinese Stories
Through discussion of the book The Seven Chinese Brothers, learners recognize that using our talents and working together to help others has benefits greater than the opportunity cost (what we gave up to take generous action).
Based on the book The Runaway Rice Cake, the group writes a familiar story from a different perspective. The moral of the story is that when the character gives generously and from the heart, the giver is also rewarded in some way.
Unit: Power and Race in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Using award-winning literature, the learners describe and analyze racism in Mississippi during the Great Depression. The readers identify the injustices in the community as well as the values and self-respect that build community relationships and strength.
We observe how power and privilege are used to keep African American families oppressed even after they were freed from slavery.
Readers examine the lasting effects of power, privilege, and discrimination on communities.
Unit: Growing Our Future
In response to reading The Lorax, participants identify what trees give to us and all sectors of society. In response, we identify our personal responsibility for caring for trees.
Unit: Environmental Groups and the Three Sectors
Learners investigate and share information about environmental organizations, particularly around the Flint Water Crisis, to compare and contrast how the three sectors differ in their purposes, goals, and achievements.
