In this lesson the learners define respect and relate it to the core values and beliefs of a constitutional democracy.
Unit: Character Education: Respect (Grade 6)
A Dr. Seuss story tells about two groups of characters who have no self-respect or respect for others. They analyze the effects of lack of respect and identify ways to demonstrate respect in real-life situations.
Unit: Character Education: Courage (Grade 8)
Learners discuss the courage and traits of a classic hero from literature or movies like the Avengers, Hunger Games, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings.
Learners do a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) of taking courageous action in a difficult situation.
Unit: Character Education: Perseverance (Grade 6)
Learners brainstorm a variety of short-term and long-term goals and discuss the logistics of carrying out the goals. They brainstorm needed resources and how they can persevere in reaching one or more of the goals.
Unit: What Respect Means to Me
Learners define respect first for themselves, then as a group, they discuss the meaning of respect in different situations.
Unit: Character Education: Integrity (Grade 8)
The learners reflect on the meaning of integrity by analyzing quotes and naming what they are "true to" in themselves.
Unit: Bully-Free Zone
The learners present skits share strategies for addressing bullying behavior. They make a plan to reduce bullying in their school or community.
Unit: Souperservice Kids
These activities raise awareness of the five senses and the role the senses play in making food choices. We read a book about the senses and practice using them in center activities.
