Learners walk around their neighborhood parks observing plants, use of space, and ways to make the shared space better. They problem-solve about things they can do and then interview and survey others to get ideas and permission to take action. 

Learners will define the term tolerance and examine their reactions to given social situations that call for tolerance.

This lesson emphasizes the importance of voluntary action for the common good based upon student understanding of one's rights and the corresponding responsibility to protect them.

Learners may use either journaling or role-playing to reflect on the benefits to the community of truthfulness and straightforward actions. They analyze traits and actions of someone who has built a "good reputation."

Working in small groups, learners match the classic hero traits to an activist who took social action for the common good.

Participants research leaders who used the nonprofit sector as an alternative power structure to make positive changes in society. They will identify the Core Democratic Values that each leader focused on.

Youth analyze personal reasons for taking action and compare them to the researched motivations for giving. 

Learners read about the actions and projects of people their age who stick their necks out for the sake of others.
