After reading two stories, learners compare and contrast the attitudes, actions, and impact of the main characters. They reflect on some essential questions: What does it mean to be a philanthropist? What does it mean to be an environmentalist? What does it mean to be a good steward...

This lesson examines the connections between the five basic guaranteed rights in the Bill of Rights and their corresponding responsibilities. Participants explore the natual consequences of fulfilling, or not fulfilling, responsibilities connected to their rights.

The learners choose a person of courage to honor on a commemorative "postage stamp."

Learners determine different ways that they show caring. They write the things they care about in word webs related to "how" they care about each thing.

Learners discover how celebrities demonstrate their caring by giving their time, talent and treasure and taking action for specific causes. It gives the learners an opportunity to begin to think of what they care about.

Learners define honesty as fairness and straightforward conduct. They look for examples in a story and analyze the merits and mistakes of the main character.

Learners write an acrostic poem about Dr. King's life and work, focusing particularly on his perseverance. 

The learners make drums with recyclable containers and colorful craft supplies. They collaboratively write and illustrate a retelling of the story of "The Drum" and give it to a younger child. 

In this lesson, the learners define the concept of responsibility through personal reflection and discussion.

In the final reflection, the learners connect the concepts of fairness and philanthropy through written a response to a quote or personal experience.
