We Define Respect
Learners define respect first for themselves, then as a group, they discuss the meaning of respect in different situations.
The learner will:
- define respect in the ways we treat ourselves, people with different perspectives, and the natural world.
respect: (n) a feeling of deep admiration for someone; (v) to admire or consider worthy of high regard
disrespect: (n) lack of regard for; (v) to show contempt for or rudeness to, to consider not worthy of regard
Instructions
Anticipatory Set:
Ask the learners to think quietly about what it means to respect someone or something. Then they turn to a partner and talk about what respect means.
As a whole group, discuss the meaning of respect. What does it mean to have respect for oneself? Ask for examples of how we treat someone with respect who has a different perspective or appearance. What does it mean to show respect for the world (or community) we share? Even when it is difficult to be respectful, why is it important?
Together write a definition of respect that reflects the values and experiences of the group.
Discuss the following questions:
- What are some behaviors that show respect?
- How does respectful behavior affect the common good?
- Do you think the concept of respect differs from person to person and culture to culture?
- What are some behaviors that are universally respectful?
- Why do you think respect might be important in any community?
