  • Script for each person at the board table, with assignments given.
  • Today's Meeting Agenda at each place.

Youth Workers
Board Simulation
From Community Partnerships with Youth, Inc.

Purpose:

  • To introduce an actual board meeting role play to participants as they begin to educate themselves to board service.

Note: This simulation can be used at the beginning of the Technical Skills section to stimulate interest in serving on boards and to point out that the script demonstrates the wrong way. The participants will be learning the correct way to handle board activities in this section and the following one. It also can be used at the completion of the Technical Skills section. By using it at the end, the facilitator is able to set the tone and make the transition to the following section on Group Process Skills. Participants now have the “technical knowledge,” but more is needed to be a good board member — the interpersonal skills and knowledge.

Variation:

To bring this information “home” to youth participants, consider role-playing a sample board meeting. For example, if the group in the Youth in Governance training is from the Boys and Girls Club, the role-play might discuss issues facing the club, such as the Steak and Burger Fundraiser. Youth and adults could discuss the event, make motions give committee reports and function as the board of directors. This role-play could occur at the end of the Technical section or at the end of the training after all information has been covered. This provides a real-life experience for the new youth trustees which will reinforce what they have learned.

Processing:

Facilitator brings group back together and begins discussion about the simulation.

  1. How did you feel about the meeting and the decision-making process used by the board?
  2. Did you feel you got to express your opinions?
  3. What would have made the meeting more enjoyable for you?
  4. Are there advantages to using Parliamentary procedure? What are the disadvantages?
  5. Does it help a board member to know the technical skills when involved in decision-making for an organization?
