Youth Workers
Action Planning Model
From Community Partnerships with Youth, Inc.
Purpose:
- To teach the participants how to plan what they want to accomplish.
- To ensure a more successful community project by using a strategic action plan.
Activity :
Introduce participants to the model used to determine how to accomplish their “stake” in the community.
Model includes:
a) Stating the problem.
b) Brainstorming possible solutions
c) Developing an Action Plan which contains: goal, objectives, time frame, people, resources and obstacles.
Processing:
- What are the advantages of a strategic action plan?
- Points to bring out:
- More is accomplished with a plan.
- More is focused on the Mission and plan is based on the resources available in the organization: time, dollars, personnel.
- A plan provides the continuity from year to year as board, staff and committee members change.
- Roles of the board and staff are clearly spelled out in a plan:
Who does what? By When? For what purpose?
- Remind group that a plan needs to be reviewed on a biannual basis to see if changes need to be made:
- Have some of the objectives been accomplished?
- Do some need to be revised based on new needs of the organization?
- Some may need to be deleted as no longer needing to be accomplished.
Variations/Options:
The Action Planning Model lends itself well to the Storyboarding training tool. Put the Action Planning Model on large sheets of newsprint or on a chalkboard. Use self-stick notes to complete the example.
