Activity
At-a-Glance
Time:
30-45 minutes
Materials:
- A 3x5 index card for the board words
- Board scavenger hunt worksheets
- The Sample Board Manual
Physical Setting:
A large room in which participants can mill around and then find a quiet spot to work together on the worksheets.
Purpose:
- To develop board members knowledgeable in the “language” of the board.
- To demonstrate how “board language” moves the board’s work in an orderly, efficient manner.
Activity:
- Give each participant an index card on which is written either a word or a definition. (If there is an uneven number or not enough cards for 19 matches, select the number of cards needed for the activity to work or give two cards to each participant.)
- Ask participants to circulate around the room to try to find the person with a card matching their words or definitions.
-
As matches begin to occur, watch to see when all matches are made correctly. Divide the pairs into teams of six.
-
Give a board scavenger hunt worksheet to each team and a copy of the Sample Board Manual to each person. Tell participants that each word or definition is found somewhere in the Sample Board Manual and that the task of each team is to find all the words and report to the rest of the group their location and meaning.
-
Start the teams on their work.
-
After about 15 minutes, bring everyone together. Teams are asked to read their words and definitions and share their tasks with the large group. Note to Trainer: All the words are found in the Sample Board Manual.
Processing Questions:
- Explain that the group is now “bilingual,” fluent in English and board language. Note: This does not take into account that some workshop participants are already bilingual. Board language adds to their knowledge.
- Ask participants where they found their words in the Sample Board Manual and what they mean.
- Instruct the team that finishes first to explain the word, definition and the page it was found in the Sample Board Manual.
- Spend time familiarizing participants with the contents of the manual. It is used throughout the Youth in Governance training.
Variations/Options:
- Divide group into two teams. Each team is given all “words and definitions” to match and find in the Sample Board Manual. The team that finds the correct matches and locations reports their findings to the entire group and is declared “bilingual!”
- To generate more fun with this activity, have the participants:
- Act out words for a board charade game.
- Compose a rap using the words.
- Use newsprint to illustrate the words or definitions, such as developing an actual agenda, writing a motion or developing a budget.
