Using a brainstormed list of health and safety issue areas, participants design and implement a survey. They poll a group of friends and family to determine what health and safety issues are of greatest concern in their community.

Unit: Community Health and Safety
Participants gain exposure to how citizens organize in response to a need. They observe the benefits of group cooperation. They review data they have collected from surveys and work in collaborative groups to identify focus areas for the service-learning project.
Unit: Healthy Youth, Healthy Community (K-2)
Students define community and recognize that a class or after-school group is a community because the members share interests and goals and work together. Focus Questions: What is a community and what is my role? What is health and why is it important?
Children explore what it means to be responsible in school and in the community as a responsible citizen. They take action as responsible citizens to make the community healthier.
Unit: Air Pollution and Asthma
Young people gain awareness of the negative effects of air pollution, especially asthma. They research and identify some of the sources of air pollution in the school and community and possible ways to improve air quality in these areas.
Unit: Courage of the Heart
Participants learn about the scientific contributions of African American inventors and scientists today and in the past.
Unit: Save a Drop For Me
Clean water is a scarce natural resource because pollution and careless action can make it unusable for consumers. Learners research reliable facts about their local water and propose philanthropic acts to contribute to the common good.
Unit: Healthy Youth, Healthy Community (6-8)
Students analyze survey results, choose a community health need, and design a service project to address it.
Students explore the meanings of community and healthy. While moving around the classroom in an organized game, they have conversations about healthy communities and healthy choices for themselves.
