Section Three:
Celebrating Diversity in Giving, Sharing and Caring
Social diversity is one of America’s greatest strengths. We are the product of many cultures and traditions as well as members of groups with very different outlooks and purposes. We differ by race and ethnicity, religion, gender, age, and income. These differences impact all aspects of our lives, from politics and family life, to where we live and work and what team we root for on a fall Saturday afternoon. They also influence our understanding and willingness to be philanthropically and socially minded. Philanthropy differs among us as Americans—why we give, what we give, and to what causes and organizations. Recognizing, understanding and celebrating this philanthropic diversity can be the beginning of engaging and stimulating discussions with your children. People don’t fit neatly into “boxes.” This section will give you insight into the varied philanthropic approaches within your family.
