Unit Overview:

This unit will study the contributions of individuals and non-profit organizations in eliminating the dehumanizing conditions of slavery during the Civil War and Reconstruction periods.

Unit Purpose:

This unit will assess the importance of volunteers, both today and in history. Students will research the work of volunteers before, during and after the Civil War and decide what they can do today to make a meaningful contribution in their community.

Unit Objectives:

The learners will:

  • identify six individuals who formed organizations/or worked for the common good within their community.
  • analyze how the work of Laura Smith Haviland was philanthropic and supported Core Democratic Values.
  • trace the origins of three organizations founded for the common good .
  • link organizations of the past to the present.
  • assess the role of volunteerism during the Civil War and Reconstruction.
  • plan a volunteer effort within the community.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

After completing a survey to determine interests and making arrangements with a local non-profit organization, students will provide volunteer service as arranged.

Unit Assessment:

  • Students will complete a chart identifying persons/organizations that worked for the common good immediately before, during or after the Civil War.
