Unit Overview:

Unit Purpose:

This unit will help learners become more knowledgeable about the effects of pollution on air quality, while encouraging them to be responsible citizens by becoming stewards of the Earth and clean air. This unit will stimulate awareness of how air quality affects our life.  Learners will develop their advocacy skills while presenting information about air quality and creating Public Service Announcements encouraging others to be good stewards of the Earth by helping clean up the pollutants in the air.

Focus Question: How can each person become involved in action and advocacy to address the issue of air quality?

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • determine the necessity to reduce pollutants that can harm the air quality.
  • describe the makeup of air quality reports.
  • recognize the need to be aware of and make public the pollutants in the air we breathe.
  • create a Public Service Announcement (PSA)/Infomercial that explains why air quality is important.
  • explore the Air Quality Index.
  • recognize the Air Quality Index pollutants and their potential for harm.
  • present the information on Air Quality Index in a useable form.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

The Academic Service-Learning component used in this Unit will be that of creating a Public Service Announcement (PSA). Learners will prepare scripts and props needed for presenting their views on how air quality can be corrected for the betterment of the common good.

Unit Assessment:

This unit provides learners and the teacher with several rubrics to be displayed and distributed so that all are aware of the expectations throughout the lessons.

School/Home Connection:

  • Interactive Parent / Student Homework:
See Attachment Two, Lesson One: Is it Breathable?

Notes for Teaching:

  • This unit can be used as an adjunct to teaching about the environment and how we can become good stewards.
  • Secure all permission to release as mandated by your local school and or district prior to displaying student work or images.
  • The unit might be especially useful for teaching the importance of clean air in the world and the harm that various interactions cause it during Earth Day (April 20th) or World Environment Day (June 5th).
