Unit Overview:

In this unit students will learn the vocabulary of philanthropy, and investigate examples of philanthropy and nonprofit organization.

Unit Purpose:

Learners will develop a working knowledge of the vocabulary associated with philanthropy and awareness of the rich history of philanthropy in the United States.

Learners will understand the importance of working together for the common good. They will create persuasive radio public service announcements about a philanthropic organization and its mission, and justify the personal choice of an organization they would like to support with time (volunteerism) or treasure.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • define philanthropy.
  • develop awareness of the individual philanthropists and the causes they support.
  • use philanthropy vocabulary words: civic responsibility, common good, foundation, non-profit sector.
  • research a philanthropic organization and its mission.
  • create a persuasive radio advertisement for a nonprofit organization.
  • choose an organization to personally support with a donation of time or treasure and justify the choice.
