Unit Overview:

In this unit students will learn what philanthropy is, and recognize its history and in their community and school.  It will introduce students to philanthropy and the Three T’s: time, talent and treasure and will show the students that they have the capacity to be philanthropic and a server for the common good.

Unit Purpose:

Students will gain a basic understanding of philanthropy and associated vocabulary. They will recognize it in the lives of others in the school, community and beyond as well as recognize their own ability to be philanthropic. Students will gain a basic understanding of philanthropic character traits and apply them to their lives.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • define philanthropy, common good, nonprofit.
  • list characteristics of a philanthropic person.
  • identify actions of philanthropic people.
  • give an example of his or her own philanthropy.
  • complete a star with ideas for personal philanthropy.

The lesson gave students a better understanding about the concept of philanthropy and its integration into their lives. Students brainstormed a variety of community connections and found ways they felt they could get involved.
