The learners will then provide a service to one a selected nonprofit organization.
Duration:
Two 50 minute Class Periods for Lesson (Plus the time allotted for the learner involvement in the identified service learning project and reflection)
Objectives:
The learner will:
- use a Venn Diagram to categorize organizations into the three economic sectors.
- compose letters to nonprofit organizations.
- select a service learning project in a nonprofit organization.
- volunteer and provide a service to the selected nonprofit organization.
Service Experience:
Although this lesson contains a service project example, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.
The learners will analyze pictures/video taken during their field trip, discuss, and identify community needs. Letters, offering service to local nonprofit organizations, will be composed in an effort to address those areas identified areas of need. Responding local organizations will form a pool from which the learners will discuss and elect which service learning project/local nonprofit organization they will offer their services. Arrangements will then be made for the learners to provide their services to that identified nonprofit organization.
Materials:
- The learner's community maps (Lesson 2) listing community organizations
- Pictures/videos taken during the bus/walking tour
- Paper and pencils for letter writing
- Phone book(s)/Internet access for addresses
- Overhead projector
- Transparency and learner copies of Venn Diagram of Economic Sectors (Attachment One)
- Letter Writing Rubric (Attachment Two).
- Handout 1
- Venn Diagram
- Handout 2
- Letter Writing Rubric
Instructional Procedure(s):
Anticipatory Set:
Compile a showing (video, digital slide, collage of photos, etc...) and/or pass around pictures from the field trip tour. Review with the students the role of a philanthropist - someone who gives of their time, talent, and treasure to meet a need.
- Return the community maps to the learners and point to the listing of needs and organizations, displayed on board, compiled from yesterday's field trip.
- Discuss the video/digital slide show, collage of photos and/or pictures in detail, reviewing the community maps featuring the listing of the organizations and the identified needs of the community.
- Tell the learners that they will need to use all of this information in filling out their Venn Diagram.
- Give each learner a copy of the Venn Diagram of Economic Sectors (Attachment One) which identifies the three economic sectors.
- Pair learners to work together, utilizing the list of organizations from the board, have them place the organizations into their appropriate circle. (NOTE: A brief review of the terms "For Profit, Government, and Nonprofit" may be necessary. See Lesson One- for a brief review of what it is that these listed organizations do.)
- Once completed, use an overhead projector and a transparency of the Venn Diagram, to show and discuss with students the correct placement of each of the identified local organizations. Have the learners fix any of their errors and include missing organizations.
- Take time to review letter writing skills (friendly letter format).
- Focusing on the "Nonprofit" sector, allow students to choose their top 3 choices of organizations they would like to help. Have them reflect upon why these organizations are important to them and their community.
- Re-partner learners based upon their top choices and assign each partner grouping to write a letter to one of the non-profit organization asking if and how they might be able to perform a service learning project to help that organization.
- Encourage the learners to revise, proofread, and edit their letter, to type a final draft, and locating the mailing address of the organization, to mail the letter.
- Upon receipt of a positive response from the nonprofit organization(s), students will determine the appropriate ways in which they might effectively contribute in a philanthropic manner (time, talent, and treasure) and the goals they hope to accomplish.
- Have the learners vote to determine to which nonprofit organization they will devote their service learning efforts.
- Organize, plan, and conduct the service learning project according to the policies of the school district.
- Upon completion of the service learning project, conduct a reflection discussion around the experience. (NOTE: See also Extension, below)
Assessment:
Assessment is based on learner involvement in class activities, to include class discussions and letter writing utilizing the Letter Writing Rubric (Attachment Two). If a service learning project is enacted, assessment can also be based upon learner involvement in the service learning project as well as the reflection discussion following the service learning activity.
Extension:
Based upon the responses from the local organizations, students should be encouraged to do a service learning project in addition to the one the class has selected. Require that each student write a minimum of 3 paragraphs to reflect upon the whole-group service learning experience. Topics to be included in the essay are: reasons for choosing this organization; actual service/role student performed; feelings about experience; future plans for volunteering; etc.
