Two Seventy-Minute Class Periods
The learner will:
- use persuasive speech techniques to encourage philanthropy.
- evaluate his or her effectiveness in the use of persuasion.
- reflect on personal attitude changes.
Students will carry out an act of philanthropy by giving a persuasive speech to younger students. Students' speeches will include details of philanthropic acts within the community, home/family and school. In addition to speeches, students will commit to an act of philanthropy in each of the three areas.
Anticipatory Set
(Teacher Note: The regular class plus a visiting class of younger students are participating in Day One's lesson.)
Read “The Three T's of Philanthropy” (Attachment One) by Gloria Germanh. Follow this with the rap “Random Acts of Kindness” (Attachment Two) by Rick Kelley .Day One:
- As an introduction into the idea of philanthropy for the visiting students, have the host students give a quick description of how philanthropy is reflected in the two opening presentations.
- Have students present the persuasive speeches created in Lesson Two: I Know I Can ). Record the speeches on videotape and take digital camera pictures of students giving their persuasive speeches.
- Direct a brief question/answer session at end of the speeches for those with questions.
- Distribute a blank sheet of paper to all visiting students and direct them to write a brief response to the question on the chalkboard: “What act of philanthropy will you commit yourself to doing this week?” Visiting students do not have to put their names on their papers. Collect the papers.
Day Two:
- Lead a discussion on the previous day's speeches and student responses. Focus on the items in the rubric.
- Watch the video of the previous day and have each speaker evaluate himself/herself using the rubric.
- After the self-evaluation, have students quietly reflect on the unit and describe how their thinking may have changed over the course of this unit.
Teacher will use the rubric created for Lesson Two: I Know I Can to evaluate students' performance on the day of the speech (live), or on the video, or both.

1 st Rap Verse:
It starts like this, it's really quite simple
the world's getting crowded, getting crammed with people
all struggling each day to just get by,
if we're gonna get together we've got to all try
to look beyond ourselves, and help each other
treat everyone you meet like a sister or a brother
and give out the love, give out the peace,
you'll find that giving is a sweet release
from stress, and pain and struggle and strain
and all those troubles that we all share
you'll find the cure is to care
2 nd Rap Verse:
You know contagious, like when you've got a cold
and you're sneezing and coughing, got a runny nose
and before you know it, your whole family's got it
before you know it, all your friends got it
before you know it, your whole school's got it
before you know it, ….I think you've got the point
imagine that kind of multiplication
with something real positive sweeping the nation
We just do it, that's the best way to start
doesn't cost anything when it comes from the heart
It could happen, it all begins with you
