Unit Overview:

Individuals who gain great successes often choose philanthropy as way to model responsible citizenship. Using the examples of three famous sports persons, students learn that these individuals wanted more than celebrity status as they demonstrate responsible citizenship in their commitment to areas of social concern.

Unit Purpose:

Some people who gain great success choose to act as responsible citizens in a philanthropic way. Using the examples of three famous sports people, students learn that these persons, not content to rest on their record in sports, chose areas of interest and concern to them and acted as responsible citizens. Students then select their favorite hero and write an essay or create a visual or song about one of the sports heroes' philanthropic actions and add their own possible philanthropies to their essay, poster or song.

Unit Objectives:

Students will:
  • list the philanthropic accomplishments of Jackie Robinson, Arthur Ashe and Tiger Woods
  • identify the benefits of private action for common good
  • analyze the connections between the concepts of philanthropy and responsible citizenship

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Reinforces academic service learning components and lays the groundwork for participation in philanthropic experience.

Unit Assessment:

Student essay, student poster and student song.
