Unit Overview:

Jane Addams is used as a model to demonstrate a responsible citizen who addressed social problems by participating constructively in her community. A philanthropist who established a settlement house in Chicago, Hull House, she strove to improve many situations affecting not only the city of Chicago, but also those at state, national and international levels.

Students then work on present day situations where a philanthropist might take action. This lesson fits into units on urban growth, industrialization, immigration, the Progressive era and women's history. Discussions could center around topics such as urban growth, immigration, the economic depression of 1893 that followed rapid industrialization, private philanthropy and the views of the times regarding philanthropy.

Unit Purpose:

To examine and learn how an historical example of volunteerism and philanthropy contributed to the common good.

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:
  • compare and contrast nineteenth and twentieth century examples of enhancing the common good
  • analyze a model of responsible citizenship and civic virtue
  • evaluate community problems and how volunteer efforts are used to solve them

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Reinforces Academic Service-Learning components of other courses; prepares the way for participation in further community projects.
