March Events and Resources

March: Spring Hope and Growth

March is a transformational month from winter to spring and inspires growth and hope. Many people celebrate March as a Reading Month. Books are a wonderful way to learn about generous ways to view the world and our part in it. During Women's History Month, we can work toward equity for women and learn about the paths of women leaders who have advocated for women's rights. World Water Day provides an opportunity to learn about clean water and environmental stewardship.

  • March Is Reading Month: Celebrate the joy of reading and the worlds opened to us through books. Use the Learning to Give literature guides to explore themes of philanthropy in picture books and YA novels.
  • Women's History Month: Read about the courage, passion, and conviction of women philanthropists in history, especially related to voting and needs of children. What women today are leading change?
  • World Water Day (March 22): Learn about the need for clean water and the science of healthy water systems.
  • Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31) - A day to celebrate the lives and contributions of trans people. Search resources.

Literacy

Literacy

Each person develops literacy, or the ability to read and write, on their own time table and related to their brain development, personal interests, and temperament. Environmental factors strongly influence literacy by building a strong foundation. Young people can learn those factors and help build literacy in their community. These factors include surrounding children with language, making reading a routine, having a variety of reading materials available, and playing games and doing art that sparks playful conversation.

Humans and the Environment

Being outside, caring for plants and animals, and conserving natural resources are often a young person’s first experience with environmental stewardship. Young people looking to a sustainable future may learn about the wonders of nature, aging water pipes, environmental contamination, plastics in the ocean, overuse of natural resources, and air pollution. This toolkit shares resources to learn, connect, and take action now as environmental stewards to assure a sustainable future in harmony with the gifts of nature.
